This church is pastored by my longtime friend Oden Fong. Oden
is truly one of the pioneers of what we now often refer to colloquially
as Jesus Music.
Many remember first hearing him as part of the seminal group Mustard Seed
Faith. There a great web site dedicated to the early years of
this phenomenon HERE.
I'm sort of the kid brother of that whole group because all those
artists had been on the scene and had "been there and done that" long
before I arrived with my guitar in my hand. Oden is truly one of
the more decent humans I know. And it will be a wonderful thing
to be with him and the Body on this morning.

I really LOVE this gig. Beth is a local legend (a founding member
of the seminal California band Honk).
She's a champion of presenting and encouraging songwriters. And
she is a first-rate writer and performer as well! As always with
these gigs, I'm not quite sure when during the evening I'll be
playing. It's part of the "just hang" nature of the night ... and
you'll certainly want to hear all the other folks.

Trust me on this. I am NOT the draw on this night. I'll
play, I'll have fun, and you may like it. But the deal is the
other folks on this night. My two "bill sharers" are new to me,
so I'll be meeting them personally and musically for the first time
that night. But Alfred and Jodi? They are simply
wonderful. I first met Alfred about 1989 or so. He played
some tunes in the middle of a David Wilcox set at the Bluebird Cafe in
Nashville. Although I don't see him nearly often enough (despite
our mutual Southern California habitat), I love the guy ... and I love
his music. He's a
killer pianist with literate,
humorous, keen observations of life ... all without descending into
cheap sentimentality or finger-pointing. In other words, it's a
No-Cheez-Whiz-Zone and you'll be very happy. I met Jodi during a
Tuesday night outing at Beth Wood's showcase in Laguna Beach (see
above). She gets it done with a Baby
Taylor, an offering of very cool songs and an
I-can-even-sing-the-phone-book voice that wins you over
immediately. Remember when singing could be soulful and
respectful of a melody without the vocal histrionics that seem to
substitute for genuine emotion? Jodi resorts only to great
instincts and a deep pool of talent. She fluently speaks what is,
to my mind, a classic and timeless musical language that is yet all her
own. This will be very cool! You simply have to come if
you're close. As
always with these gigs, I'm not quite sure when during the evening I'll
be playing. It's part of the "just hang" nature of the night
... and you'll certainly want to hear all the other folks.

I'll be leading worship as well as sprinkling a few of my own songs in
as well. As far as I can remember (and that's getting to be a
dubious thought in and of itself), I haven't played here before.
Or if I did, it was so long ago that it's like the first time all over
again. Doesn't matter. You're welcome if you can make it.

The Men's Group will be grilling and then I'll be chill-- no ... no ...
no, I'm not going to do it. I'm just going to resist the
temptation. ... I'll be SINGING after! They'll be saving me
a plate of burgers so I won't be enjoying my meal throughout the
concert. When I actually turn down food, I'm either sick or
singing. (Sometimes both but that's a whole 'nother story.)
Join us and bring your appetite.
